Strike Over!,
all is good again in the apple. I think!
The trains are running the busses rolling and the cabs are aggressively cutting across two and three lanes of traffic for one and two passenger fares again, all “on or near schedule” as the saying goes. The city is back on track, ready to go shopping, dinning out, shopping some more, see a show, perhaps check out the tree at Rockefeller center, pick up an item or two, stop for cocktails and maybe shop a little more.
To think, New Yorkers lost three whole days of opportunities to spend the cash they have and don’t have on things they will soon forget, quickly fall out of fashion/style or into technical obsolescence, only to start the entire cycle of self indulgence to keep the economy chugging along all over again.

All considered, the transit workers strike might have done us all a favor this Holiday Season, as they forced New Yorkers to get to know each other up close and personal. As we found ways to car pool with neighbors share cabs with strangers, wait on long lines, New Yorkers did what ever it took to make what had to happen in this town happen. All the while, showing the globe that New York truly is the greatest city in the world. Well that’s the hype anyway.

The true heart of the citizens showed as they appeared to see through the efforts of our business interest only Mayor to drive a wedge between fellow workers simply because they were striking to maintain a decent benefit/retirement package to protect themselves and their families.

At a time when the American worker is being forced to contribute more and more to receive less and less each year, the Mayor’s strategy was simple, keep the public aware that these “thugs” have benefits far better than they will ever have and let human nature do the rest. Wow, these people can retire at 55 and don’t have to pay for benefits, while I have to work until I am 62 with no guarantee of anything when I am used up and no longer able to compete with someone younger and willing to work for less.

The mayor called the leadership of the transit workers union selfish, but that’s a difficult charge to make stick, when the union was willing to take this unpopular action at this unpopular time to fight for decent wages, benefits and retirement packages of those not even yet hired. This was a philosophical stand that needed to be taken so all workers can see that they are more than simple tools for the business machine to use up until useless with little regard for the aches and pains breathing conditions, the varicose veins, carpal tunnel syndrome, the strained eyes and so on that will plague them for the rest of their lives.

One must remember, our mayor is a shrewd and successful businessman, as it’s been reported that he’s worth more than a billion dollars. It’s difficult to imagine one reaching such a financial plateau without finding creative ways to get the most out of a worker while giving as little as he can in return.
It’s “The Cool Guy’s” opinion; that New Yorkers could see that they shouldn’t be angry the T.W.U. has these benefits, they should be angry that they don’t. When it comes to your retirement, is that light at the end of the tunnel a decent life or just another train to run over cause you’re to old to get out of the way?

It’s Black
Box Wednseday!


Your Town,
written by Walter Corwin and directed by Jonathan Weber provided a light hearted look at small town life in the Hudson Valley through the eyes of someone that had to have spent a great deal of time there to get to know, understand and appreciate it’s underlyning issues.

The story is about an un-named town along the Hudson River in upstate New York where people keep jumping off one of the local bridges. The mayor of the town is doing everything to keep the town’s reputation in tack while battling a niece that’s bent on publicly divulging her theory that some prevailing sickness is causing people it to copy cat the others. The reason why is never really established, but in the grand scheme of things, it doesn’t matter because, the script is funny, fast moving and tightly written.

From the aging, gun toting, cat killing couple, to the under paid ,over worked dissatisfied community college professor and his neurotic love interest, this story reveals the silent cries for attention and justice many living on the outskirts of any major city must feel deep within.

Director and actor Jonathan Weber held the production together creatively with no less than 13 scenes on a rather cramped stage where Mark Marcante, set and lighting designer expertly synchronized his efforts seamlessly with the continuos set changes.

All considered, this production is a bargain for the pittance of $10.00 per ticket at the Theater For The New City located at 155 first Ave, in the east village. Bush defends spying in U.S.
SAYING EAVESDROPPING IS LEGAL AND EFFECTIVE, PRESIDENT VOWS MORE

Headlines like this, are what America awoke to yesterday along with Sunday morning political analysts and pundits Chris Matthews of the “Chris Matthews Show”, George Stephanopoulos of “This Week” Tim Russert “Meet The Press” and Bob Schieffer “Face The Nation”.
All, to a man, queried those that should be in the know about what they knew about what the government is allowed to know about Americans, without Americans knowing about it.

From Sen. John McCain, R-Ariz. to Sen. Joseph Biden, D-Del., to Lindsey Graham, R-S.C. to Sen. Carl Levin, D-Mich., all wasted no time letting us know how little they knew about any of the presidents authorizations to allow the NSA (National Security Administration) to monitor phone, calls, e-mails and faxes of United States citizens without establishing probable cause as mandated by law.

Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice argued, the president took these extraordinary measures to protect the country and it’s citizens from future attacks and to give the Homeland Security effort the tools needed to do just that. Dr. Rice continued to assert, these wire taps and other means of electronic surveillance will only be employed against those that have been identified as having links to terrorist activities or terrorist organizations. We are told, that there are specific lists that have been developed and maintained to determine whom warrants attention.
That all sounds good on the surface, even if it does skirt the law a bit, after all these are dangerous times.

What scares the hell out of Lee “The Cool Guy” is whom is determining what is considered terrorist activities and what constitutes a terrorist organization.
One could make a case, that protesting the war is considered behavior that could land a citizen on the list. One could make the case that belonging to a peace group is subversive. Or what about those that may be involved in anti recruitment efforts, this too could be seen as a threat to national security.
Think of it, what should you tell some unfocused youth seeking advice on joining the armed services to be all he or she can be? Should we worry if we offer different options if we think the government is within earshot?

All I can say is,
I love my country!
