It’s Black Box Theater Wednesday again and we have a got a gem of a of a comedy to review for your immediate attention. Cul-de-sac, by John Cariani is currently previewing at the Connelly Theater in lower Manhattan.

Staring in this tragically farcical madness, Cariani cleverly wrote this work to induce tears and laughter simultaneously as the viewer is confronted with the realities of life in the slow lane; home in the burbs, kids; smoke-em if you got- em, mini van, and pizza on Friday nights. You know, the American dream except, all the while wondering if you are keeping up with the “Jones”.

Ah yes, the Jones’; the one family in every building neighborhood or community that seems to have it all together; the right cars, the right schools for the kids, the great career with a caring eager spouse at home ready to please. Not!

This play tells the story of three suburban couples struggling to find direction for their existence, recover lost passions, and add a sense of excitement to their otherwise drab, ordinary, and predicable lives. Through a triangular view, each household is so consumed with their neighbors superficial lifestyles they can scantly appreciate they’re own.

This alone, is enough material to get a bunch of chuckles to cover the price of the ticket, but John Cariani goes a step further. Anthony Perkins style, he slyly takes us to a darker side of the human psyche to show how the “Jones’” really live and feel. Not so quietly macabre.

Lee The Cool Guy Say this one is a must see and a bargain for the price.

It’s Black Box Theater Wednesday here at RetroVision Theater and we are reviewing Overlap Productions’ presentation of Nightwatches; a new play by Victoria Stewart and artistically directed by Susanna L. Harris and Tania Inessa Kirkman.

Opening April 13th and running thru April 29th at the Access Theater in lower Manhattan, this sensitive story is that of a mans sexually repressive nature holding a love starved lonely and passionate soul of a woman emotionally prisoner on a farm while scratching out a meager living during the 1900’s.

Trapped into the arranged marriage by a Victorian mannered mother, incubating her own desires far too long, is allowed to meddle in the marriage to the point of destroying even the most minuscule portion of passion and compassion her uptight self mutilating and self loathing husband is capable of offering.

The play is tastefully presented with very brief nudity and narrated love scenes in a completely darkened theater, allowing the audience to feel the shame and guilt that the characters experienced before, during and after the act of love.

A simple production with strong acting and a well constructed script will always rate good theater. Overlap Productions scored high marks in all categories that count, in determining a quality production that makes for a pleasant theatrical experience.

Black Box Theater Wednesday

RetroVision Theater gives a solid “Bravo” to The Private Life Of the Master Race opening tonight at the Walkerspace theater on walker st. between church and Broadway in SoHo.

Authored by Bertolt Brecht ,and translated by
Binyamin Shalom with James Phillip Gates, directing the cast to an admirable job of infusing the precise amount passion, gut wrenching ,self exploring feelings into this German poet, playwright, and theatrical reformer’s work. Brecht, whose epic theatre departed from the conventions of theatrical illusion and developed the drama as a social and ideological forum for leftist causes.

This story centers around life in Nazi Germany during the rein of the so called glorious third Reich and how the regular person on the street dealt with the fear of reprisals should he or she to fail to acknowledge, at all times the superiority of the Nazi Party and the “Arian way”. All the while, the citizenry is being force to ignore the governments shortcomings and brutish control over any and all those that may differ in they’re thinking.

One is challenged to did deep into their own soul to discover if they possess the courage, strength of character and conviction to do the right thing for those who have been unfairly targeted and singled out as non-conformist and mal-contents.

This is a tale of the forgotten victims and cowards that are forced to live day after day, year after year reliving the moments in their lives when they could have made a difference but chose silence and compliance.
This is a must see for it’s historical value and lessons for the future.
