(D)Congressman Maurice Hinchey launching Media Ownership Reform Act (H.R. 3302) at the Hudson Valley public forum on Media Consolidation, in partnership with the Northern Citizen for Responsible Media. This is part one of a three part series on media conglomerates gaining a stranglehold on the public airwaves offering little in return other than high profit commercial and national coverage completely devoid of investigative reporting and local issues.
While this was a local story, it has national and international implications…Take note and offer feedback to those in your communities. Plus more Retro Video Drama…Dangerous Assignment starring Brian Donlevy

With all the negative news coming out of our “almost” fair city this week, we have a recommendation for you this weekend that will challenge your sensibilities and possibly expand your tolerance for the lives and lifestyles that may differ from the bland standards and parameters we are strongly encouraged and many times forced to reside within.
I am referring to the revival of Harvey Fierstein’s Torch Song Trilogy opening at the Gallery Players Theater this Saturday past being produced by M. R. Goodley and directed by Stephen Nachamie.
Walking in blind, I had only heard about the original play through readings and friends that raved over the famed drag queen’s story about the fight to refuse to allow a straight world define him while struggling to find true love, rejecting the overnighters and seeking a sense of normalcy that is the mainstay of the human experience.
Taking on the world and accepting no crap from anyone Arnold (Seth Rudetsky) spent a lifetime of mending his continuingly broken heart just to keep pace with confused love affairs and with lovers having no concept of commitment as they struggle to admit their own conflicting issues, leading him up one blind alley of disappointment after another.
Even a straight lacer like myself could relate to the agony one has to endure to go against the grain of life to establish a sense of self and pride even when family has forsaken you because you just won’t or can’t be the person they envisioned you to be in order to make their lives complete.
This is the tale of a gay person showing strength and courage in the face of overwhelming odds to tell all concerned, he is who he is and nothing can change that, not even an overbearing know it all classically Jewish mother(Laura Sommers Raines).
Done in three long and detailed segments (acts), the show runs for nearly three hours, but the theater is so engaging and filled with humor, sadness, drama and triumph that you will hardly notice the time passing.
I would go so far as to say, this is a show that all should see and appreciate for what life can do to a person if they simply roll over without a fight and allow forces outside themselves define them as well as what can be accomplished when one decides to take a stand.
This play maybe lightly laced with humor, but it is anything but light, as it deals with every issue, from gay bashing, to violence against gays, to the right to rear a child, to the loneliness the gay world confronts everyday of their lives.
The bottom line I got from this experience was the fact that the gay world is by happenstance not by choice. One can no more change their sexual orientation, than a black person can change their race. No one is asking for total acceptance, as much as acknowledgement of that fact.

The results are in, Iraq is now considered a full fledged civil war and we didn’t even have to wait for the Baker Hamilton report to come to the conclusion that we have lost our way in Iraq and are now simply trying to find a means to leave with a modicum of self respect for the military.
The lives and efforts wasted by this administration should never be forgiven as they led this nation blindly into a caldron of horror, ill prepared for the predictable outcome. We are going to be laughed at as surely albeit as quietly the Israelis were when they limped out of Lebanon without the kidnapped soldiers they claimed they would not leave without.
After decimating the country’s infrastructure and causing the deaths of more than eleven hundred non combatants with an untold number of wounded, the Israelis concluded they were no closer to accomplishing their stated goals than they were prior to the conflict. Feeling the pressure of world opinion they found a way to ease out of the tension with as little loss of face as possible. But the world knew what happened. The Israelis started a war they could not finish.
I guess one could theorize that the concept of winning conventional military conflicts in the twenty first century is just not possible, and those we entrusted the job of navigating our forces to engage our perceived enemies with world war two/cold war mindsets and tactics in the twenty first century were woefully out of touch with how the world, cultures, and ethnic relations work beyond our own borders.
Today, unless you are willing to lay waste to an entire nation, with a total scorched earth policy, leaving neither man woman nor child left standing and the devil with world opinion, anyone considering occupying a sovereign nation to the point of total pacification is going to find themselves in the same Iraqi hell we are in today.
As the eggheads contemplate a strategy to exit Iraq, we will know, the truth is, we lost another war; a war that we should have never started. And the karma American will face as a result of it is still unknown. Thus far, we have paid only a small down payment on the bill that is coming due for this great folly of aggression.
We may have claimed we were ridding Iraq of a tyrant, but I think we have exposed ourselves as tyrannical.
Where do we go from here is the question that only a great leader can answer and point to that direction. Our problem is however, great leaders are in short supply if any exist at all.

Day two of our coverage of the tragic shooting of a twenty three year old groom to be by NYPD after a Bachelors party at a Queens NY nightspot.
Mayor Bloomberg and Police commissioner Ray Kelly apparently gained the confidence Rev. Al Sharpton as he met with the mayor and opther community leaders but did not stay for the following press conference.
The mayor and the commissioner expressed genuine concern for a complete, impartial and independent investigation of the incident in this writers opinion, and seemingly willing to let the chips fall where they may if there was any hint of police misconduct.
We are in wait and see mode now and maybe this time, under this administration the city populace will feel justice will be done.
This stuff ain’t pretty, its just New York.

History Repeating It’s Self All Over Again!

Tragic holiday shooting leaves one man dead, one in critical condition and another with three bullet wounds, reportedly in stable condition, and the NYPD answering few questions. Mayor Bloomberg and other top city officials are meeting at city Hall today to talk with community leaders and the public about what happened and the status of the ongoing investigation.
Initial thoughts of the incident, was that of race being a factor, but the police were quick to point out that the demographic of the five officers using their weapons were two whites two blacks and one Hispanic. I have not personally confirmed that as of this posting, but today’s show has other significant possibilities that may have played a substantial roll in the incident.
Other news, 450 billion dollars will be spent this Christmas holiday on gifting and things purchased for ourselves as we are driven by the ads geared to get you in the store and maxing out your credit cards. We have got alternatives to that manufactured mindset for your consideration this year.

Yeah yeah yeah we know, it’s Black Box Theater Wednesday and you are here looking for a recommendation and or review of a local theater production for a possible look see this weekend; and it was our intention to provide you with just that.
However, the shows we checked out this week were so bad, we thought it would be heartless to ruin the holiday for some poor talent less son of a bitch by giving them the verbal beat down they most aptly deserve.

I guess I am feeling benevolent or perhaps uncharacteristically mindful of the feelings of others to take this stance, as I couldn’t get out of my head, the thought of how someone might feel showing up at thanksgiving dinner with one of my vicious attacks on their efforts to write, direct and act professionally. I know I wouldn’t enjoy it considering the planned text I was ready to hit send on.
So, I’ll play Mr. nice guy for one of the few instances in my overbearing, aggressive, take no prisoners, scorched earth and bridge burning style of communicating.

In the meantime, we’ve got another great episode of One Step Beyond for you today, and remember we will return Monday with our regular daily podcast of the news, comedy and a few new tricks we have hidden up our sleeves.

Enjoy!

Hang in there folks, a few precious days off from the madness are just within reach. Well, at least for those not forced to carry work home; you know, the corporate crew. Or, wait a table, ring a register, cover for some lame son of a bitch that failed to relive your shift. God help you, if your gig is medial related, law enforcement or have fire and emergency response responsibilities.

Or perhaps you work for mass transit, airline/airport personnel and security, cab and private livery services or maybe you got a part time job in the corner grocery store. Or, you are the take out deliver biker person, a bail bondsmen, a bookmaker, not to overlook the drug dealers, hookers and scam artists.

Did we mention the elementary, middle and high school teachers with papers and exams to grade? Oh, did I forget the stock room clerks and cleaning staff as well as state correctional facilities personnel? And don’t forget the postal people, television and radio professionals, as well as everybody from the military to the NFL the NBA, college football; the clergy even… Holy shit, the to go business most be booming!

Now don’t you have something to be thankful for? At least you are none of those people. On the other hand, if your not any of those people, you might not have anything to be thankful for!

Happy Thanksgiving (In case I am a no show Thursday)
