The Girl Detective written by Kelly Link and adapted and directed by Bridgette Dunlap left this writer thoroughly confused and confounded by the unclear storyline that failed to ever unveil itself beyond its fantastical shadings. I think the story was about some person place or thing in search of its parentage through the consumption of the dreams of others from the underworld, I think. I had great difficulty coming up with the right words for this review, as I am not ashamed to say, I simply did not get it! The production was filled with great choreography/interpretive dance, excellent singing and some relatively humorous acting, but for some reason the meaning of the story being conveyed eluded me.
Playing at the Connelly Theater in the east village, I awaited this show with higher than usual expectations as this is a venue I have witnessed very good to extraordinary performances in the past. Therefore, base upon the title, I was looking forward to something lite, laughable, cute, and entertaining at the very least. But I had no idea; I’d be leaving the theater with no idea.
The experience was not necessarily a bad one considering the girls in the play were pretty in their embroidered panties, and they did do a mean time-step dance routine or two, but somehow I think the writer would have appreciated it, if her audience got more from the performance.
I guess the bottom line here is this fundamental question; have I seen worse? I don’t know, because the way the play was adapted for the stage, I am not sure what I saw was what I was supposed to see. The next and most important question is; would I recommend this show to a friend? I don’t know again, because I don’t know how smart or not you have to be to get it!
