The Girl Detective: Reviewed

The Girl Detective written by Kelly Link and adapted and directed by Bridgette Dunlap left this writer thoroughly confused and confounded by the unclear storyline that failed to ever unveil itself beyond its fantastical shadings. I think the story was about some person place or thing in search of its parentage through the consumption of the dreams of others from the underworld, I think. I had great difficulty coming up with the right words for this review, as I am not ashamed to say, I simply did not get it! The production was filled with great choreography/interpretive dance, excellent singing and some relatively humorous acting, but for some reason the meaning of the story being conveyed eluded me.
Playing at the Connelly Theater in the east village, I awaited this show with higher than usual expectations as this is a venue I have witnessed very good to extraordinary performances in the past. Therefore, base upon the title, I was looking forward to something lite, laughable, cute, and entertaining at the very least. But I had no idea; I’d be leaving the theater with no idea.
The experience was not necessarily a bad one considering the girls in the play were pretty in their embroidered panties, and they did do a mean time-step dance routine or two, but somehow I think the writer would have appreciated it, if her audience got more from the performance.
I guess the bottom line here is this fundamental question; have I seen worse? I don’t know, because the way the play was adapted for the stage, I am not sure what I saw was what I was supposed to see. The next and most important question is; would I recommend this show to a friend? I don’t know again, because I don’t know how smart or not you have to be to get it!

Where Does Joe Lieberman’s Loyalties Lie

Joe Lieberman reportedly willing to make party switch if Democrats continue to go in direction of cutting funding for the war in Iraq. Lieberman has been a consistent supporter of the president’s actions in Iraq even in the face of Republicans distancing themselves on the issue. Lee thinks Joe’s loyalties may be as close to Israel as they are to America; and considering Hillary Clinton’s strong support from pro Israeli interest among her constituents, it’s not unreasonable to see why she is having difficulty admitting her vote was a mistake. Lee believes her financial support probably won’t allow her to go much beyond the “If I knew now what I knew then” statement.
Former president

La Vie Noir And Arrivals Indie Theather Reviewed And Recommended

This week we got a twofer for Black Box Theater Wednesday, as we recommend La Vie Noir written by Jim Neu and directed by Keith McDermott currently playing at The La Mama Theatre along with Arrivals by David Gow playing at the Bank Street Theater with Kevin Kennedy producing.
La Vie Noir is a delightfully different tale about a odd group of characters finding themselves trapped in a Tiki styled bar having no idea if they lives really exist or they are simply characters living out some cliché riddled 1940’s film noir flick. The characters are rich and the dialog is delivered at the right pitch and pacing to keep the audience fully engaged and totally immersed in the comedy that is laced within. You shall enjoy this one immensely.

Arrivals, our second recomendation is a more sobering piece concerning the true story of a Syrian born Canadian citizen, traveling home with an unfortunate stopover at JFK International when his is pulled aside by security for a closer look. His tale leads to Syria to be tortured for information he does not have while his government fails to protect his rights as a Canadian citizen. The writer gave his audience just the right amount of energy to his characters with power and punch to his dialog to get the message out without becoming preachy. Bravo!
This one is more than worthy of the price of admission.

White House’s Tony Snow Selling New Line For Surge; Troop Reinforcements

White House crap salesmen Tony Snow made the rounds on the Sunday talking head shows to recalibrate its surge message, calling it reinforcements for our troops to get the job done. This, clever shift in the language works well to put an image of a much need Calvary coming to the aid of our brave warriors trying to complete their mission. This seemingly minor nuance makes the Democrats look like they are trying to lock the spare ammo and food rations locker, leaving the troops in a foxhole counting bullets and rationing water as they are overrun by the enemy. You throw in a little fear chat, indicating what will happen in Iraq if we don’t succeed with this plan, and you got a great propaganda visual working for you that is going to take a skillful communicator to overcome. The Democrats answered with Carl Levin’s plan to move forward in placing limits on the types of operations the troops will be allowed to carryout, as we begin a drawdown.
