To quote Alfred Lord Tennyson; “Tis better to have loved and lost than to never have loved at all,” sets a suitable foundation for a night of heart warming one act plays delving into the tragic and the magic of romance, the human condition, along with the need for affection, companionship and love. Plucking Failures Like Ripe Fruit; A Night of Romantic Tragedies presented by No Tea Productions is a delightful piece of theater, full chock full of comedic tales; complex and not so, that cuts to the core of how people connect, disconnect and sadly never connect.
With as many as ten one act plays on the bill for any given performance, one could see a different show each night as the audience is encouraged to randomly select titles from a jar. Based on the picks, those six-seven plays will be performed that evening. We were lucky enough to enjoy:
1-900 Desperate By Christopher Durang, a really funny story of a night of desperation phone chat replete with a crew of misfits and a five year old that could use some attention.
4 am (Open All Night) by Bob Krakower, (one of my favorites) a cool story of a midnight burger flipper playing match maker to a couple of been there, done that, who’s gonna want me types.
Request Stop by Harold Pinter is another crazy thought providing experience depicting an oddball vagrant making herself bothersome as she baggers her unfortunate targets with not so odd and innocent questions. While this one is funny it is clearly designed to make you think.
Cold by David Mamet, which I must admit, I didn’t get. But sharper minds may have better luck.
Please Have a Seat and Someone Will Be With You Shortly by Garth Wingfield, (another favorite) is about two screwballs awaiting their fifty minutes on the couch with their headshrinkers, chancing a conversation that happily leads to a fantasy affair and back to their sad realities. Despite its ending, it is still a lot of fun.
Breaking Even by Dan Dietz, is a goofy but hilarious short about the world’s luckiest lady hooking up with the world’s lamest loser in Las Vegas, both wanting to end their streaks the hard way.
