Issues Under Fire: Big Bucks Barack Banks on Bulging Budget

In an unprecedented effort to kick start the economy with a blast of borrowed cash, President Obama has turned Washington’s spend on the rich while soaking the middle class business model upside down. This blockbuster of a budget changes the way things have been done for so long, it has left the Republican naysayer crews scrambling for a fresh mantra. The dog-eared and shop worn “Democrats only know how to tax and spend” has no audience anymore,
especially, when the spending is being done on the people for a change.

With a long overdue form of universal healthcare on the horizon, much needed relief on the way for financially stressed homeowners as well as the unemployed and under employed, many in the middleclass are beginning to get it; the highest echelons of income earners should kick in their fair share to bring this nation from the brink of financial disaster. After all, it was this same protected class that caused the economic collapse in the first place.

However, even though we can see the Present getting high marks from the masses, he is sure to be blasted by the faceless wealthy elite’s flunkies, masquerading as fiscal conservatives in the House of Representatives and the Senate. The President was wise to take his case to the people for approval first as he is going to need their full support and total buy in if this plan has the very slim hope of turning the tide.

With people losing their homes, their jobs, their healthcare for themselves and their families, along all hope for some, it is going to be very difficult for the Republicans to mount any kind of serious campaign negativity without offering a real alternative. So far, they appear like a rudderless vessel with worried weasel Bobby Jindal at the helm.

Thus far, the President has kept the majority of his campaign pledges much to the chagrin of the Republicans. As promised, the President is winding down the war in Iraq, making moves to end the no bid contracts, reporting the real military budget, putting the screws to purveyors waste and fraud in the current healthcare system and cracking down on corporate loopholes, among a multitude of other changes. Finally, we got somebody in the White House that is not only going to level with the American people, but level the playing field in the process.

Do we think President Obama is going to make all our dreams come true? No F-ing way, but if were lucky, he might help us avoid some of our worst nightmares. Click here for the podcast

Issues Under Fire: How Do We Take The Business Out of Health Care

The New York Times headline read today; “To pay for health Care, Obama Looks to Taxes on Affluent”. The story goes on the detail how the President intends to call for stricter limits on the benefits of itemized deductions taken by the wealthiest households, according to administration officials. In this environment of the rising cost of health care and fewer and fewer Americans being able to afford it anymore; even those lucky enough to still have a job, this should be a slam dunk for the president.

The Republicans will shout and scream at the eye popping price tag and try to give cover to those who make the most amongst us, but for all their bitching and complaining, they will probable loss this fight. The country is in real trouble right now and the Republicans have no solutions, answers or even proposals that have not already been tried and rejected.

Those who have stood in the way of health care reform in this country for decades have finally met their match, both from a new President with a new message, a method and a much needed agenda, but also from a nation that is finally feed up with Washington’s business as usual governing. However, while we think our new President is on the right track by finally and ambitiously pushing for universal health care, he has to be very mindful of finding a way to change the mindset of how health care is delivered in this country.

In the old days, people went into the health care field to heal the sick for the purpose of doing good with their God given talents and skills. There was a strong humanitarian aspect to the treatment and care of another human being suffering. A doctor’s reward many times was the sincere appreciation of the life that was saved, or the pain that was relieved. But these days, that is all a distant and fading memory, as over the decades health care has devolved into just another business.

Unfortunately, in the business of health care the human being is now reduced to a serviceable commodity until it’s predetermined value has been exceeded. Ones value in the current method of healthcare delivery in America is determined by one’s ability to pay for said health care. The fact that a small child has an immediate need for medial attention and a health care provider is within reach, that child will be given a cursory evaluation at best in an emergency setting and quickly sent packing without any follow up and without a second thought if payment can’t be guaranteed.

With the cost of prescriptions, dental care, vision, mental health care now far beyond the average American’s ability to afford, somehow the country is going to have to take the business out of medicine. We know this is ivory tower thinking, but if we let those that have allowed the healthcare system to turn a profit off our very bodies, it won’t be long before we’re all just meat for money in the eyes of medical providers. Frankly speaking, we’re already there and have been so for years.

As it is now, neighborhood clinics spring up over night with friendly names, supposedly ready and happy to serve the community. Many of these facilities are owned and operated by small groups of physicals that have banded together for the sole purpose of making a nice buck of the health care industrial complex. You, the actual patient is nothing more than a plastic healthcare charge card to be maxed out.

These slick bastards can send you for test after test after test and find nothing; the cost of said test may never be know to you, however you can bet your insurance company will know. If you are lucky, your employer will keep you around for the next year’s health care open enrollment. That is of course, if you are not to sick to be kept on the plan that neither you nor your employer can afford.

We have seen these MRI store fronts type facilities in neighborhoods, many lower income and like jiffy lube stations they receive referral business from the local hospital’s attending physician’s, all getting a nice cut from the deal. In many cases, it’s impossible to tell if the patient really needs the dose of radiation, but that is between the doctor and the patient that don’t have a clue. The only thing that can be verified is somebody is getting rich from the process.

We agree with President Obama that universal health care is sorely needed in the country and the fact that we need it now. But we also think the country could probably pay for it a lot less painfully if we focused on the business of delivering it. We also know it is just a pipe dream to think there are enough ethically inspired humanitarians left within the healthcare profession to make the needed radical changes. But somehow, we have to put the discipline of medicine back into the hands of real doctors and healers and taken out of the hands of the meds for money crew. Click here for the podcast.

Issues Under Fire: Is Tiny Tim Geithner Up For This Big Job?

Barack Obama, known for his trademark inspirational speech making abilities will have to be at the top of his game tonight when he faces America with his administration’s plans to rescue the nation from the depths of financial despair. He is now the country’s top pitchman, charged with the awesome task of allaying the fears of workers and wannabe workers alike.

As if that were not enough, President Obama has to settle the markets down, ease the nerves of investors and shareholders, while considering the big question of; to nationalize or not to nationalize the nation’s biggest banks. Even still, the President has to make the country feel good about its future as it struggles painfully in this ugly present. All that being said; if anybody can get this job done it is Barack Obama.

However, as President, Obama’s playing days are over. He is sitting in the coach’s chair now and is relying on his team to execute the plans. Each presumable handpicked team member is going to have to produce and produce under extreme pressure, as the clock is running out.

With all the skills President Obama has to work with, he is facing a very vocal, nitpicking Republican opposition that appears content with simply looking for opportunities to criticize and mock his efforts. He has twofaced butt wipes like Congressmen Eric Canter to contend with, he has ass licks like Louisiana Governor Bobby Jindal looking for his fifteen minutes of fame at the administration’s expense, he has another small group of small minded, shortsighted, southern political opportunists like Governor Haley Barbour of Mississippi, Texas Governor Rick Perry, South Carolina’s Governor Mark Sanford and of course Alaska’s wacky woman of the wild Sara Palin, all playing the usual games of saying no in public to wasteful Washington cash and then quietly grabbing all they can behind their constituent’s backs.

While a great speech, a bright smile, and an honest effort matched with a sharp mind will garner high approval ratings and the support of the populace, in order to win this losing battle the country is fighting, it’s going to take a lot more. And more has to come from the team the President has brought on to the court. Our most valuable player right now is Treasury Secretary Timothy Geithner. While he missed some easy shots at the beginning of the game and had to be benched for awhile, we need this guy to step up at this make or break moment. Unfortunately, Tiny Tim must have slipped into the locker room to throw up because he has been nowhere to be found as of late.

At a time when coach Obama has drawn up a last shot opportunity to tie the game with a drive to the basket, finishing off a two point lay up with a chance to get a foul called, we can’t find Tiny Tim Geithner anywhere. We need a guy that can not only ward off low bridging, cheap and dirty shot Republican defenders, but a guy that can be relied upon to hit the game tying free-throw. We need Tiny Tim to inspire the exhausted and bleary eyed fans, because we know he is going to hit nothing but net like Steve Nash of the Phoenix Suns and not come up short like Shaquille O’Neal. This ain’t hockey where there is a possible tie; this is B-Ball baby where there are only winners and losers.

We have gone way passed the games now, a point the Republicans just don’t get, for if we lose this contest, we don’t just miss the playoffs and get to try again next year, if we lose this game, the franchise folds. Click here for the podcast.
